Our Flight Over Lake Eyre - Outback South Australia
We had one last holiday with only the a pair of us on the birth of our own first child and it was either head up north to vacation from the cold Melbourne winter, or head across to the Flinders Ranges and perform a charter flight over Lake Eyre. After a brief stopover in Adelaide choose up the folks, we travelled North along a corner roads through country towns such as Burra and Peterborough. The scenery was stunning, with rolling green hills and derelict stone huts left from when the first settlers moved into the area. Our first day was for examining the Flinders Ranges as last time For being there was 24 in the past as an early teenager on the family excursion. We ventured into Wilpena Pound and went to buy nice stroll down to Hills Hut and back, a hut that was built coming from the first pastoralists that arrived to Wilpena Pound and has been restored to the former beauty. After some lunch we then drove the Morlana Scenic Drive, a dirt road that runs through the Flinders Ranges from West to Distance. The country side was only stunning, and with the sun setting behind us the red rocks just came alive.
The second day was our flight over Lake Eyre all of us were down at the bush runway early as we were all anxious to start our journey. The pilot was running a little late as had been ice inside the plane today after an incredibly cold evening, but computer systems long before we were in atmosphere and flying over the Flinders Spans. To see the Ranges from the air was stunning, with the massive Wilpena Pound and the Ranges heading North, with flat open land on either side and Lake Torrens off in the distance, by using a layer water in it from recent rains in the area. As we left the Ranges and flying the actual years desert, there was a green tinge within the land and huge waterholes still filled with water from a recent rains.
A amount hours later we were flying over Lake Eyre, and how much of an incredible site it was being. While the South Lake did a few water in it, has been the North Lake the location flood waters from Queensland had stumbled. The ever changing colours where normal water was lapping at the extra edge of the salt lake, to the deep reds where the bacteria was forming, towards the deeper channels where the was flowing down from the rivers. A person first looked North there had not been distinction inside horizon in which the water and sky merged as one, where from 500 feet the river disappeared into the distance. This incredible sight is end result of rains that occurred months beforehand hundreds of kilometres away, with vast volumes of water bringing life to a spot where normally there will be little life.
After flying across the river for 25 minutes and simply covering 50 percent the area, it was time to fly to the William Creek Pub for dinner.
